Turn approval Anxiety into Self-Acceptance

A participant of one of my workshops used the ideas i provided him to give himself the courage he needed to attend his high school´s twenty-fifth anniversary homecoming dance. Henry said, "I thought seriously about not going because I was worried what people we are going to say about me.
You´ve heard that line about reunions being where everyone gets together to see who´s falling apart? That´s what i was afraid of. Back then I was the star running back, prom king, and student body president. Now I´m losing my hair, I´m carrying around fifty extra pounds and I couldn´t sprint a hundred yards if I had to".

Henry realized he was about to talk himself out of attending this once-in-a-lifetime event because he was concerned about the raised eyebrows of his former classmates. "Instead of worrying what they might think, i asked myself, "What do i think? I think i want to go back and see my high school buddies and the football coach who helped me get a college scholarship." I decided to go and have a good time, and let people say what they will".

Henry called me the week after the reunion to say he was so glad he´d trusted his instincts instead of his apprehensions. His old football coach had pulled him aside and confided privately to him that Herny was the most talented athlete he´d ever had the privilege of coaching. He ran into pals he hadn´t seen in years and they reestablished the rapport they´d had in high school. "I can´t believe i came this close to missing out on all that fun".
